Avionics provider SPAES has installed a FLARM collision avoidance system on a Bell 214 helicopter for a customer.

The FLARM (Flight AlARM) system is an innovative collision avoidance technology specifically designed for aviation. It uses advanced electronics and intelligent algorithms to alert pilots to potential aircraft conflicts in real time, even in areas with limited radar coverage. By integrating the FLARM system into the Bell 214, SPAES has significantly improved the helicopter's safety profile, particularly when operating in busy airspace.

Two FLARM antennas have been strategically placed to maximise signal reception and transmission. The installation process involved the integration of the FLARM avionics into the existing Bell 214 helicopter avionics suite. Seamless integration into the aircraft's existing systems and interfaces was ensured in close cooperation with the customer. Various test procedures were performed to validate the functionality and performance of the system and to meet the highest industry standards and regulatory requirements.

The FLARM system offers numerous advantages to operators of the Bell 214 helicopter. For one, it improves pilots' situational awareness, allowing them to spot nearby aircraft even in difficult visibility conditions. In addition, the FLARM system helps prevent mid-air collisions by providing visual and audible alerts that alert pilots to potential conflicts and allow them to take evasive action in a timely manner.

"The installation of the FLARM collision avoidance system in the Bell 214 helicopter not only increases safety measures, but also instills confidence and security among pilots and operators,” says Joachim Schanz, CEO of SPAES.
