Bespoke interiors company Boutsen Design has been speaking to EBAN about some of its recent projects, and president Daniela Boutsen says that the fine details make all the difference. “As we are well established and have wide experience in aircraft decoration, we know the specific needs such as weight, storage considerations, and even safety features, and we combine this with an aesthetic and artistic design approach,” she explains.

“We begin by meeting with the client and the designer to understand the colour and pattern theme they have selected. Instead of changing things, we work together to find the perfect complementary items. For example, if the aircraft has an established colour scheme or pattern, we will select a chinaware set to match it. Every detail of the final decoration is used to re-emphasise the client's wishes.”

In instances of new-build aircraft, Boutsen collaborates with the interior designer and acts as a consultant to give them decorative options. “We always work visually, providing mood boards and renderings to accurately visualise the end result,” she continues. “Most often, we will begin with the dining set, as it is the most important element. Clients tend to have a personal experience with it, so it is important that it sets the right theme. Based on that, we can see whether the theme will be gold or silver, contemporary or classic, and so on.

“From there we can continue with the rest of the details including linens, blankets, glassware and luxury amenities. All of these details flow together to create the onboard experience. We can even add an additional level of customisation by personalising the initials on selected pieces.”

Understanding each individual is paramount; some clients have children or are from different cultures, and all circumstances are taken into account. “We work around everyone's needs and go the extra mile to ensure the decorations fit perfectly to their vision,” Boutsen concludes.
