Falcon 900 operators showing strong interest in EASy II flight deck

The second generation of Dassault award-winning EASy flight deck is generating a strong level of interest within the Falcon 900 EASy community, among existing operators and new customers alike.

Since its certification in June of 2011, more than 40 Falcon 900EX and LX series aircraft have been retrofitted with EASy II and ten new Falcon 900LX aircraft have been delivered with the new flight deck. Fully one-third of the Falcon 900 EASy fleet is now equipped with EASy II, 75% of them in the US.

The new flight deck popularity is demonstrated not only by retrofit requests and new sales but by the busy training schedules posted by Dassault's approved training partners. To date, almost 250 pilots have gone through initial training on the new platform.

"EASy II is rich in new features that improve situational awareness and enhance safety and has been embraced enthusiastically by Falcon operators," said John Rosanvallon, President and CEO of Dassault Falcon. "It not only improves the aircraft's operational abilities but also takes advantage of the newest air traffic management tools."

One of the popular options offered in EASy II -- synthetic vision -- overlays a graphical representation of terrain onto the primary flight display, vastly improving situational awareness and confidence in low-visibility conditions. "We fly in all kinds of conditions, often making it hard to judge where you are in relation to the terrain," said Florian Kuhn, a Falcon 900 pilot for a global pharmaceutical company. "It was obvious this solution would give us greater confidence, whatever the weather. It gives the pilot a totally different view of the surroundings compared to just looking at the instruments."

Installation of EASy II is primarily a software upgrade with some hardware components. The installation can be done at any Dassault Aircraft Services facility or Authorized Service Center and requires 5-12 working days of downtime, depending on the options selected. The upgrade can also be installed during a major inspection, minimizing the impact on the operating schedule.

Initial training on the new platform consists of two days of instruction including a full-flight simulator session.

Meanwhile, development and testing of EASy II for the Falcon 7X and 2000 EASy series aircraft continues at a swift pace, with the first certification flight test campaign scheduled to take place in June. Certification is expected for both models by the end of 2012.

Dassault's newest aircraft, the 3,350 nautical mile Falcon 2000S, will come standard with EASy II. The aircraft is also undergoing a thorough flight test campaign, including EASy II features. Certification of the new aircraft is planned for end of 2012.

EASy II Features

EASy II offers improved display symbology and an update to the Flight Management System (v7.1) along with an improved Take Off and Go Around capability and a Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS)

Additional options include Synthetic Vision, enhanced navigation functions WAAS- LPV and RNP SAAAR, Automatic Descent Mode (ADM), XM Graphical Weather integrated into the INAV map and ADS-B Out (Automatic Dependant Surveillance Broadcast).

There are also two new communication features: FANS 1A and PM-CDPLC (Protected Mode - Controller Pilot Data Link Communication) introduced to comply with Europe new data link mandates. These will be available before the end of 2012.
