RUAG Business Aviation and Rockwell Collins collaborate to offer new upgrade for Piaggo P180 Avanti aircraft

RUAG Business Aviation strengthens its role as a leading aftermarket service provider and modification center in Europe for Piaggo P180 Avanti aircraft. At its center in Lugano, Switzerland, the company is taking pre-orders and seeking for a launch customer for the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 Integrated Display System (IDS). The upgrade is expected to be available in the 4th quarter of 2010.

"This program forms an integrated part of RUAG's strategy to become a leading aftermarket service provider and modification center in Europe for the Piaggio P180 Avanti aircraft", says Beat Höhener, Vice President of RUAG Business Aviation. "We are delighted to offer this significant upgrade in collaboration with Rockwell Collins to the P180 Avanti I operators supporting the needs of enhanced awareness and advanced features."

Driven by customers' input, the system is designed with an emphasis on improving reliability and lowering operating costs. Major reliability improvements are gained by replacing legacy equipment with corporate and airline proven Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 video capable Adaptive Flight Displays (AFD), dual Attitude Heading Reference Systems (AHRS), dual Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM), compliant Air Data Computers (ADC) and a robust, electronic Engine Indication System (EIS). The new equipment and installation is covered by a comprehensive two-year RUAG Aviation/Rockwell Collins warranty.

In addition to the reliability and weight-saving benefits associated with this modern equipment, operating costs are further reduced by including a two-year Rockwell Collins warranty, known as the Corporate Aircraft Service Program (CASP), for any Rockwell Collins cockpit avionics equipment not included as part of the Pro Line 21 IDS installation. With the CASP warranty, IDS upgraded aircraft will incur virtually zero avionics operating costs during the first two years after installation. Potential savings are estimated at $100,000 per aircraft.

This flexibility enables IDS to interface with Universal's UNS1-LW WAAS/LPV-compliant flight management systems. Other P180 interface options include Rockwell Collins Integrated Flight Information System (IFIS), existing APS-65 autopilot, and TCAS, TAWS and lightning detection systems.
