Universal Avionics' Learjet 35 AHS-525 AHRS installation and certification underway

Avionics Integration & Engineering Corporation Switzerland's program to install a Universal Avionics (UA) AHS-525 Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) on at least two Learjet 35 aircraft is now underway. The engineering firm will perform the installation and EASA/FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) at the operator's base in north Germany.

“We are excited to bring this cost-effective technology to the Lear 35 series aircraft,” said Robert Clare, UA director of sales. “The AHS-525 offers a significant and economical replacement for the existing heavy iron gyros,” he added. “The operator can look forward to reduced operating costs.”

The AHS-525 contains multiple rate gyros to measure angular aircraft motion in the pitch, roll and yaw axes, and several accelerometers to measure aircraft linear motion along the longitudinal, lateral and vertical axes of the aircraft. This enhanced functionality allows a single AHS-525 to replace multiple Line Replaceable Units (LRU) found in a typical aircraft installation that would be performing the same functions. As a result, there is a reduction in the LRU footprint, weight, wiring and power requirements. The unit is 7.5 pounds (3.4 kilograms), including the fixed mounting plate, which provides for more efficient serviceability whereby the aircraft is not required to perform repeated realignment and calibration.

Featuring digital, analog, discrete and synchro inputs and outputs, the AHS-525 supports a wide variety of interfaces on Part 23 and Part 25 fixed wing aircraft, and Part 27 and Part 29 rotorcraft. The unit can be installed as a single backup unit or dual system for Primary Flight Display (PFD).

Other STCs in development for the UA AHS-525 AHRS include the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and Dassault Falcon 20 aircraft platforms. UA is actively looking for more participants for STC development with first-of-type incentive programs available.
