Woodgate's name goes up in lights

Woodgate Aviation's name can now be seen glowing in the night sky as aircraft touch down at Belfast International Airport. New signage above the hangar door is the first LED-lit sign of its kind to be installed at the airport site. The gigantic sign proclaims the name of the company in white lights which is visible from every vantage point at the complex and on the major approaches to the main runway.

The company logo, the wing section, contains 120 LEDs with 700 LEDs in the Woodgate name. The sign is 15.5 metres wide and 2.4 metres high. It was produced by Strabane-based Visual Edge.

Woodgate Aviation general manager, David Shaw, said the hangar was so big, it had to have an illuminated sign as large as the one now above the hydraulic hangar doors. Mr Shaw said: “Even though the hangar has been operational for well over a year, erection of the sign was the same as a 'topping out' ceremony on any new building.

“It's best appreciated at night when the lights power up. The wing glows orange while the name is all in white, with blue halo lighting. It can be seen from some considerable distance and is already attracting quite a bit of interest around the complex.

“We opted for a sign as large as this because, frankly, anything smaller would have been lost on a hangar this size. We're delighted with the end result. There's no mistaking where we are or who we are, and that's a positive statement by this company.”

Ian Friel, director of Visual Edge, said: “We relished the challenge of making and installing one of the top five signs we've ever produced. We've been in business for 50 years and have unrivalled experience in this sector. Woodgate wanted the best, and I think Visual Edge met the demanding specification.

“From our perspective, we're delighted that a local company awarded this important contract to another local company. We've produced something that's a bit special at the airport, the first of its kind, and we'll be showcasing the end result to other prospective clients both locally and further afield.”
