Overview

The Gulfstream III is an improved variant of the GII. Work began on the aircraft in 1976 at Grumman American and was continued by Gulfstream Aerospace. The GIII retained the existing wing box structure and trailing edge surfaces of its predecessor, but with a greater span, a longer leading edge, a modified contour plus winglets. The fuselage is 2 ft longer aft of the main door, the radome is extended and there is a curved windshield.

Having tested three and four engine configurations, Gulfstream decided to keep to the same number as on the GII; two Rolls-Royce Spey Mark 511-8 turbofans, each producing 11,400 lbs of thrust on take off. The Speys are noisy, and many GIIIs have been retrofitted with sound suppression systems or hushkits on the engines in order to meet most noise standards through Stage 3.

The GIII received its type certificate from the FAA on 22 September, 1980 and more than 200 units were manufactured. It set speed and distance records in its category in the 1980s, crossing both the Atlantic and Pacific without a fuel stop and flying around the world in 47 hours and 39 minutes in 1982. The GIII could fly farther and faster that the GII with 15 to 20 per cent better fuel economy.

As Gulfstream moved to develop a follow-on aircraft, the GIV, that addressed both fuel burn and noise issues, so GIII production stopped in 1987.
