Overview

Upon its introduction in 1996, the Citation X (model 750) became the fastest civilian aircraft in the world. It was introduced at the October 1990 NBAA convention in New Orleans and the prototype made its maiden flight on 21 December, 1993. Type certification was received on 3 June, 1996.

The first Citation X was delivered in July 1996 to golfer and long-time Cessna customer Arnold Palmer, who set a speed record in September 1997 of 473 knots on a 5,000 closed course. Other owners included film director Sydney Pollack, entrepreneur Steve Fossett, Formula One driver Nelson Piquet and at least one former US president.

The Citation X was approved by Transport Canada on May 22, 1998, and by the European Joint Aviation Authorities in 1999.

The wing, tail, tail cone, gear and systems of the Citation X were designed from scratch. It was the first aircraft from Cessna to use a Rolls-Royce engine and fully integrated avionics, and while it has the same fuselage diameter as the Citations VI and VII, the wing attachment to the fuselage, slung under rather than passing through, is different from that in any previous Citation.

The large diameter of the engine intakes reduces the noise from the pod-mounted engines and improves fuel efficiency, and the highly swept wing with supercritical airfoil increases the the top speed. The Citation X has 37 degrees of sweepback at the quarter chord and the horizontal and vertical stabilisers are also highly swept and are arranged in a T-tail configuration.

Its controls are powered by dual-hydraulic systems for redundancy. One of the major challenges of the overall design was finding enough space in the wing to run all the necessary hydraulic lines. At the time, the chief engineer of the program explained: “The Citation X needs just as many hydraulic pumps and actuators as a large airliner, but has much less space inside the wings.”

In 2018, after a 22 year run, production of the Citation X came to an end. The imminent arrival of the Citation Longitude meant crossover in terms of range and capacity and so the 750 series was phased out.
