Overview

The CASA C-212 is a twin turboprop-powered STOL medium transport aircraft originally designed and built in Spain for civil and military cargo and light airliner use. C-212s are now produced under licence in Indonesia by Indonesian Aerospace. The design was initially marketed under the name Aviocar.

Design work began in the late 1960s and the first military prototype flew on 26 March, 1971. CASA then developed a commercial version, the first examples of which were delivered in July 1975. Production ceased in 1978, and CASA switched to the Series 200 with more powerful engines and higher operating weights. The first of these, a converted C212C prototype, first flew on 30 April, 1978. Series 300 was certificated in late 1987 and the latest variant, the C212-400, was launched in 1997. It features TPE331-12JR engines that maintain their power output to a higher altitude for improved hot and high performance and an EFIS flight deck.

The C-212 has a high-mounted wing, a boxy fuselage and a conventional tail. The tricycle undercarriage is non-retractable. It has space for up to 21–28 passengers depending on configuration, and since it does not have a pressurised fuselage, it is limited to low flight level usage below 10,000 ft. It therefore suits short legs and regional airline service, as well as transport, rain-making, surveillance or search and rescue and its rear ramp has made it popular within the skydiver and smokejumper community. The C-212 can operate in areas lacking in infrastructure and on unpaved runways.
